Kottayam: Mahatma Gandhi University has announced the introduction of four-year degree programmes in Arts and Science colleges starting from the upcoming academic year. The university has formulated rules to facilitate this transition, whereby 54 existing three-year degree programmes will be extended to four years.
According to the order issued by MG University, students who complete three years of study and pass the exam will receive a degree certificate. They will have the option to complete the fourth year if desired. However, an honours degree will only be conferred upon students who complete the full four-year programme. Those who excel academically during the first three years will have the opportunity to pursue Honours with Research in their fourth year.
The implementation of the National Education Policy has led to the introduction of a certificate for students who complete the first year and a diploma for those who complete two years of study. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formed an expert committee to further study this matter. As a result, exit options are currently not available for students in their first two years of study at MG University.
