Thiruvananthapuram: The name of the Malayali astronaut participating in Gaganyaan, Bharat’s first manned space mission, has been disclosed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, hailing from Nenmara, Palakkad, is one of the four astronauts for the Gaganyaan mission. Prashanth Balakrishnan has been appointed as the head of the mission’s task force, which also comprises Angad Pratap, Ajit Krishnan, and Shubhanshu Shukla.
Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, designated as the commander of the Gaganyaan mission, has a background as a fighter pilot specialising in flying Sukhoi fighter jets. After completing his education at the National Defence Academy, Prashanth Nair joined the Air Force as a commissioned officer in 1999.
Prime Minister Modi unveiled the names at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) during the inauguration of three significant technical facilities of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Tuesday.
