Kochi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil Bharat’s first hydrogen fuel cell ferry today, marking a significant leap in maritime innovation. Developed domestically under the supervision of Cochin Shipyard, the hydrogen-powered vessel represents a milestone in sustainable transportation. The hydrogen fuel cell ferry, designed in a catamaran model, will commence operations in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, revolutionizing short-distance travel in the region. With a capacity to accommodate up to 50 passengers, this fully refrigerated ferry promises to offer both efficiency and eco-friendliness in its service.
The inauguration of this hydrogen fueled ferry, built on an experimental basis for the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), signifies a transformative project that positions Cochin Shipyard on the global stage. Cochin Shipyard Managing Director Madhu S Nair expressed optimism about the potential impact, suggesting that the success of this venture could pave the way for future hydrogen-powered cargo and country boats.
