Thiruvananthapuram: The upcoming Gaganyaan mission is set to bring double joy to Malayalees, as not only is a Malayali astronaut part of the traveling group, but also a fellow Malayali is tasked with preparing the astronauts’ diet. Dr. E R Nandeep, a scientist from the ICMR National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in Hyderabad and a native of Vithanassery village in Nenmara, has been entrusted with crafting the diet plan for the mission.
Those selected for the Gaganyaan mission undergo rigorous dietary regulations to ensure their optimal health and performance. A thorough body check is conducted, and they are provided with meticulously balanced meals that encompass all essential nutrients. The Defense Food Research Laboratory in Mysore, under DRDO, is tasked with preparing the astronauts’ food menu, which consists of ready-to-eat items designed for long-term preservation during spaceflight. Upon returning to Earth, a different diet plan will be implemented.
The menu includes a variety of dishes such as idli, uppumavu, biriyani, vegetable pulao, dal curry, mixed vegetable curry, chapathi, and other flavorful delicacies, all meticulously prepared in Mysore. These ready-to-eat meals are packed in special containers that can keep them fresh for weeks. Additionally, drinks are provided in sachets accompanied by specially designed straws for consumption in space.
