Wayanad: Six veterinary college students were arrested in connection with the death of Siddharth, a second-year BVSc (Bachelor of Veterinary Science) student who was found dead at Pookode Veterinary College in Wayanad.
Police informed that the arrests were made under various charges including abetment to suicide and the Prohibition of Ragging Act. According to reports, Rahna Binoy, S D Akash, RD Sreehari, S. Abhishekh, Donsdai, and Billgate Joshua, who were also students of the same college, were among those arrested.
The police stated that the six were directly involved in beating Siddharth. Initially, the police lodged a case of unnatural death, but later registered a case against 12 students, including SFI leaders of the campus. The total number of accused now stands at 18, and the number may increase, according to the police. However, 12, including the SFI leaders, are still absconding.
Last night at 8 pm, eight individuals were called for interrogation, and six of them have been arrested. The police found that they had beaten up Siddharth, insulted him, and conducted a public trial in front of students. The accused who were produced before the magistrate have been remanded. The police stated that the investigation team will file a custody application for the accused.
It is reported that problems erupted on February 14 in connection with Valentine’s Day celebrations at the college. Some of Siddharth’s seniors brutally beat and insulted him publicly for performing a dance with senior girl students. Subsequently, on February 18, Siddharth was found dead, hanging in the hostel bathroom on the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University campus, Pookode. The post-mortem report mentioned injuries to the backbone, head, and various parts of the body.
