Wayanad: Reports of torture and subsequent death of JS Sidharth, a student of Pookode Kerala Veterinary and Animal Husbandry University, on February 18th has shocked Kerala state. He was found hanging in the hostel toilet. It is alleged that several SFI leaders of the campus were behind the atrocities against Sidharth and that he suffered torture for many days.
According to witnesses, before he was found hanging, Sidharth was subjected to extreme brutality, stripped naked in front of 130 hostel students and beaten with iron rods, wires and belts. Post-mortem report revealed that Sidharth’s backbone, head, and various parts of his body was injured.
Sidharth was subjected to torture by senior students, including SFI leaders, for dancing with senior girls during a Valentine’s Day program. He is also said to have undergone a mob trail, stripped naked, restrained with a rope and hit with iron rods.
Though six students have been arrested by the police, Sidharth’s father, T Jayaprakash, said that the arrested were not the main culprits. He said that the police are not arresting the main culprits, which includes 12 SFI students, due to the pressure from the communist party.
