Thrissur: Amidst the ongoing controversy regarding the weight of the gold in the crown presented by BJP leader and actor Suresh Gopi to the ‘Lady of Lourdes’ at Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral, sculptor of the crown, Anu Ananthan Achary, has stepped forward to respond to the issue. Anu Ananthan’s statement has gained attention on social media following allegations that the crown given to the cathedral was made of copper covered by gold.
According to Anu Ananthan, Suresh Gopi entrusted him with crafting a golden crown for the ‘Lady of Lourdes’. He provided no specific instructions regarding the quantity of gold or any other details. Anu Ananthan emphasised that Suresh Gopi’s sole concern was for the crown to be beautiful. The crafting process spanned 17 days, during which Suresh Gopi supplied enough gold for the crown’s creation and instructed Anu Ananthan to request more if necessary. Anu Ananthan did not weigh the gold provided, and any surplus gold was returned to Suresh Gopi. Anu Ananthan further clarified that Suresh Gopi did not inquire about the weight of the crown, as it was intended as an offering to the ‘Lady of Lourdes’.
Suresh Gopi, accompanied by his family, visited the Thrissur Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral on January 15, ahead of his daughter Bhagya Suresh’s wedding, and presented the crown to the ‘Lady of Lourdes’ as part of his faith. But under the influence of the false propaganda of LDF and UDF activists, certain members of the church committee raised doubts regarding the crown’s weight. By analysing the statements by Anu Ananthan, it is clear that the allegations against Suresh Gopi were politically motivated.
