Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has issued a warning, stating that if the government fails to settle its dues, measures such as load shedding may be inevitable. KSEB has formally communicated this concern to the state government, underscoring the urgency of the matter. Efforts are being made to avoid load shedding as it is exam season. But the KSEB has warned that load shedding may start any day if electricity is not purchased in advance.
The recent decline in rainfall has worsened the situation by reducing water levels in dams. Additionally, the cancellation of long-term contracts poses a challenge as it limits access to affordable electricity. Alternative sources could be explored, but this requires significant expenditure, which the board is currently unable to afford due to financial constraints and limited access to loans.
Mounting arrears in electricity bills and sustained losses have hindered KSEB’s ability to secure loans, resulting in its inclusion in the list of Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) banned by the Reserve Bank. If loans were to be obtained, the board would face considerable interest payments, further straining its financial position.
