Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Tourism Department has revealed that the implementation of the floating bridge project across the state was carried out without a government order or master plan. Responding to queries under the Right to Information Act, the Tourism Department admitted that no criteria were established for selecting contract companies or ensuring security measures.
The initiative to introduce floating bridges in Kerala was undertaken by the Department of Tourism to offer a unique experience to tourists. In Kasaragod, these floating bridges were installed under the supervision of Bekal Resorts Development Corporation Ltd (BRDC), and in other districts, the responsibility fell under the District Tourism Promotion Councils (DTPC).
While celebrating the project as a huge success, the tourism department has not taken any responsibility for the tender process or the selection of companies. Notably, no master plan was formulated, and no efforts were made to assess environmental factors or ensure project implementation standards.
Following a recent floating bridge accident in Varkala, the DTPC shifted blame to the contract company, absolving itself of responsibility. The accident occurred shortly after the bridge’s inauguration on December 29. Amidst these developments, it has been noted that an official from the DTPC, previously serving as Secretary, has been promoted to a higher position within the Minister of Tourism’s office.
