Thiruvananthapuram: Supplyco stores across the state are facing a shortage of ‘K-Rice’ and other subsidised goods, creating inconvenience for consumers. With the scheduled launch of ‘K-Rice’ today, many outlets are facing a shortage of rice, along with 13 other subsidised items. Supplyco has explained that ‘K-Rice’ will be made available at the outlets after its official inauguration.
The distribution of ‘K-Rice’ was supposed to start today, marking the first phase of its rollout through 56 designated outlets. However, even the main outlet in Thiruvananthapuram city, the East Fort outlet, didn’t receive the rice. Out of the 10 kg of subsidized rice allocated by Supplyco, 5 kg is earmarked for sale as ‘K-Rice’ in separate packaging.
Different varieties of rice will be available at different prices: Jaya rice at Rs 29 per kg, Kuruva rice at Rs 30, and Matta rice also at Rs 30 per kg. ‘K-Rice’ is introduced as an alternative to ‘Bharat Rice,’ aiming to challenge the offerings provided by the central government. However, Supplyco is grappling with the challenge of meeting demand due to the shortage of supply.
Distribution plans specify that Jaya rice will be made available in Thiruvananthapuram, Matta rice in Kottayam and Ernakulam regions, and Kuruva rice in Palakkad and Kozhikode regions. To ensure brand recognition, the rice will be distributed in Sabari-branded ‘K-Rice’ bags.
