Thiruvananthapuram: For the past 32 days, young aspirants, considered the future of tomorrow, have been staging a protest in front of the Secretariat, demanding job opportunities they rightfully deserve. The rank holders of the CPO (Civil Police Officer) position intensifying their protest, highlighting the urgency of their employment plight. Despite the escalating intensity of the protests, the government appears to have turned a blind eye to their demands. In an attempt to address the issue, the Chief of Police recently released recruitment figures. However, the candidates countered this move by providing precise figures themselves, leading to further scrutiny. Now, the Chief Minister has stepped in, presenting revised figures during a press conference which also met with the allegations of false statistics.
According to the Chief Minister, all current vacancies for the position of Police Constable have been reported to the Public Service Commission (PSC). He stated, “A total of 5635 vacancies have been reported, including male and female categories, Scheduled Castes, and Special Recruitment for Scheduled Tribes. The men’s category saw 4325 vacancies reported last year, while 744 vacancies were reported for women. Additionally, 557 vacancies have been earmarked for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, with 396 posts allocated to address the under-representation of Scheduled Tribes as per the 2017 directive.”
Furthermore, the Chief Minister disclosed that 1400 temporary Police Constable Trainee posts, including 200 for women, were created following the 2023 order. The PSC has reported vacancies up to June 2024 in advance, with recommendations received for 1400 posts. Additionally, 155 vacancies generated by the establishment of the Cyber Division have also been recommended for recruitment.
While 3595 recommended candidates have completed the training process, the verification process for remaining recommendations is underway. The Chief Minister also mentioned that the appointment recommendations for 356 vacancies, including 50 for women, are in progress.
However, the CPO rank holders have contested these figures, labeling them as misleading. They have vowed to provide precise rebuttals to the Chief Minister’s statements, with a response scheduled during today’s protest.
