Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of high temperature in nine districts in Kerala. The IMD has issued a yellow alert in Palakkad, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Thrissur districts today.
With the mercury expected to rise, citizens are advised to take the necessary measures to combat the heat. Here are some tips to stay safe during the hot weather:
- Refrain from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m..
- Drink plenty of fresh water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid dehydrating beverages like alcohol, coffee, and carbonated drinks.
- Opt for loose, light-coloured cotton clothes to stay cool. Don’t forget to wear footwear when stepping out, and consider using an umbrella or hat for added protection.
- Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables, and consider drinking Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or buttermilk (Sambharam) to replenish electrolytes.
- It’s essential to give clean drinking water to students in educational institutions. Adequate air circulation should be maintained in classrooms, and water availability should be guaranteed in examination halls during exam periods.
- School authorities and parents are advised to pay special attention to students during this time. Assemblies and other events that expose children to excessive sunlight should be avoided or rescheduled.
