London: Finally the United Kingdom Parliament passed the bill which will make Brexit possible. This makes Britain the first country to leave the 28-member strong European Union. The credit for finally passing the bill goes to Prime Minister Boris Johnson who won the recent election on the promise of taking Britain out of European Union (EU), which his predecessor, Theresa May, could not accomplish.
The Conservative Party members had majority in the Lower House of Parliament and so the EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill was passed with ease. The bill then had to be passed through the Upper House of Lords. However, the House of Lords made some changes to the bill and sent it back to the House of Commons.
The Lower House did not entertain the five amendments made by the Upper House, which backed down and let the bill pass the Parliament.
Now the bill awaits the royal accent of Queen Elizabeth II, which might be received as soon as Thursday.
The passing of the bill is a historic win for Prime Minister Boris Johnson who was voted to power recently on the promise of taking Britain out of the EU. His predecessor, Theresa May, had failed three times to pass the Brexit bill and had to resign.
Boris Johnson faced lawmakers, who tried to stop the bill from passing, by going to the people and seeking their approval. In the snap elections that followed, Boris Johnson and his Conservative party came back with overwhelming majority. This made resistance against the bill redundant and led to its eventual passing in Parliament.
