Washington DC: The United States President, Donald Trump, was saved from an embarrassing impeachment after Republican Senators backed him strongly and voted against charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
The President won comfortably with 52 to 48 votes for the charges of abuse of power and 53 to 47 votes for charges of obstruction of Congress. The number of votes Trump won is a far cry from the two thirds majority of votes needed to impeach the President.
Donald Trump has become the third President in the United States to survive an impeachment move. Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998 faced the same situation as Trump did and won.
The Supreme Court Chief Justice, John Roberts, who presided over the trial said, “Two-thirds of the senators present not having found him guilty of the charges contained therein, it is therefore ordered and adjudged that the said Donald John Trump be, and he is hereby, acquitted.”
Surprisingly, Mitt Romney, a long time enemy of Donald Trump, voted against the President on the charges of abuse of power.
