Doha: A historic peace agreement is signed between the United States and the Taliban insurgents of Afghanistan in Doha today. According to the peace deal the US will withdraw all its forces within 14 months and the Taliban will end its relationship with Al-Qaeda and other foreign terror groups.
However, the US side said that the peace deal is based on Taliban’s guarantee that it will abide by its terms.
The peace deal was signed between US State Secretary, Mike Pompeo, and Taliban leader, Mullah Baradar.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, “Effort only became real when the Taliban showed interest in pursuing real peace & ending their relationship with Al-Qaeda & other foreign terrorist groups. The agreement that we will sign today is the true test of this effort.”
He added, “We will closely watch the Taliban for their compliance with their commitments and calibrate the pace of our withdrawal with their actions. This is how we will ensure that Afghanistan never again serves as a base for international terrorists.”
US armed forces will leave the Afghanistan in a phased manner in exchange for security and promise of talks with the government in Afghanistan by the Taliban.
