Washington: US President Donald Trump announced to halt America’s funding of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and blamed it for “severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.”
“Today I am instructing my administration to halt funding of the World Health Organization while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus. Everybody knows what has gone on there,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday.
The Trump administration had also accused WHO for collusion with China in the coronavirus outbreak that brought America’s economy to a standstill.
Responding to this, UN Chief Antonio Guterres said, “As it is not that time, it is also not the time to reduce the resources for the operations of the World Health Organization or any other humanitarian organization in the fight against the virus.”
American taxpayers provide between USD 400 million and USD 500 million per year to the WHO, while China contributes roughly USD 40 million a year and even less, Trump said.
The United States has been the worst-hit country killing over 25,000 people due to coronavirus.
