US State Department has announced about the resumption of talks with Taliban as US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad is set to visit Kabul, Doha and additional regional capitals for a political settlement in Afghanistan.
Khalilzad will resume discussions with Afghan Government officials and Taliban representatives for a long-lasting political settlement and permanent ceasefire. This will be Khalilzad’s first trip since US President Joe Biden took office.
Khalilzad was the US top negotiator with the Taliban during the Trump administration. He also helped negotiate Doha agreement that was signed under the Trump administration in February 2020 by the US and the Taliban last year.
According to sources, Biden’s Government will not withdraw the complete troops from Afghanistan because the Taliban have not followed the commitments of the deal.
