The Arctic region and Antarctica could melt due to global warming, Ruslan Edelgeriyev, the Special Representative of the Russian President on Climate Issues told Sputnik.
“You know there are [climate] models that say the ice caps could melt. There is no exact data as different models provide different periods. However, in theory, there is a clear rationale that this may happen. The rising ocean level, the melting Arctic ice – this is an issue that has been studied a lot. There is a theory that confirms that such ice caps could melt,” Edelgeriyev said.
According to scientists, the Earth is facing global climate change accompanied by the rising planet temperature. Greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere speed up the changes, which lead to the rising ocean level and the ice melting.
