Hiroshima: In a recent interview to BBC, during the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, said that legal migration to the country is too high. He also told that he was considering a range of options to bring down the number of legal migration into the country.
The report by the news media said that the Prime Minister was under pressure from his Conservative party to deliver on a 2019 manifesto promise to bring down levels of net migration.
Rishi Sunak did not directly respond to the question if he would stop the practice of some international students bringing dependants with them when they come to study in the UK.
The rise in migration in 2022 is attributed to people coming to the UK from outside European Union. This included 1,70,000 arriving from Ukraine and 76,000 from Hong Kong. Around 2,70,000 people came to the country for studies.
Sunak said that the numbers were too high and wanted to bring them down. He also added that the acceptable level of numbers would depend on how the economy is doing at a given time.
The Prime Minister also stressed that his priority was tackling illegal migration.
