London: Boris Johnson has resigned his MP seat with immediate effect said a report. He said that he is standing down as MP of Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency. The move comes ahead of the Privileges Committee report whether he made misleading statements to the Parliament about parties at Downing Street in violation of Covid protocols during 2020 and 2021.
The former Prime Minister said that he got a letter from the privileges committee and said, “Much to my amazement they are determined to use the proceedings against me to drive me out of parliament.”
He also added, “I am very sorry to leave my wonderful constituency. It has been a huge honor to serve them, both as Mayor and MP.”
If the privileges committee recommends a suspension from the Commons for 10 days or more after approval by MPs, then it would lead to by-election if 10% of the constituency backs the move.
However, his resignation comes before privileges committee publishes its report in the next few weeks.
