Moscow: Amid rising tensions between Moscow and Wagner Group, the Russian President Vladimir Putin said that severe punishment will be given to those who are on “path of treason” or armed rebellion. He also said that necessary orders have been given to Russia’s security forces against the rebellion of the Wagner Group led by Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Putin said, “All those who deliberately stepped on the path of betrayal, who prepared an armed insurrection, who took the path of blackmail and terrorist methods, will suffer inevitable punishment, will answer both to the law and to our people.”
Putin labeled Wagner’s actions as “a stab in the back of our country and our people”. He has imposed anti terrorism security measures in the Moscow regions and many other regions, which shows the seriousness of rebellion of the Wagner Group.
Wagner Group led by Yevgeny Prigozhin is said to have captured the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don close to the border with Ukraine. His soldiers have taken control of the military establishments there.
Wagner Group leader Prigozhin had been very critical of the military leadership of Russia for the mounting losses of the country’s war with Ukraine. The mercenary group had fought alongside Russian army in Ukraine and was a force to reckon with. The Wagner Group has thousands of soldiers in its payroll with a huge chunk of its fighters being recruited from prisons across the country.
The sudden provocation by the Wagner Group to march into Russia from the battlefields of Ukraine is an airstrike by alleged Russian forces on Wagner soldiers. However, the Russian Defense Ministry has denied responsibility for the attack.
