Washington: A high level bilateral meeting between India and the United States is scheduled to take place today at the Department of State in Washington. Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale will meet the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at 6.30 pm Indian time.
They are likely to have discussions on bilateral relations, major foreign policies and security related developments. Though both sides claim this is a regular high-level dialogue, the meeting becomes significant on the background of high tensions between India and Pakistan.
Since Pulwama attack, the US has given huge support to India and strongly urged Pakistan to dismantle its terrorist infrastructure. According to a high level US official, Mike Pompeo had a major role in de-escalating the tensions between India and Pakistan.
In addition to his interaction with Mike Pompeo, Vijay Gokhale will also have meetings with Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale and Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Andrea Thompson. He will also meet senior leaders of the US Congress.
