New Delhi: Bharat has decided to partially resume visa services in Canada. The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has officially announced the resumption of various visa categories, including entry visas, business visas, medical visas, and conference visas, effective today. However, the reinstatement of other suspended services is contingent upon a thorough assessment of the situation, as stated by High Commission officials.
The bilateral relationship between Bharat and Canada has been marred by tension following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of Bharat involvement in the killing of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In response to these allegations, Bharat took the step of suspending visa services for Canadian citizens seeking entry to Bharat at the end of September.
India’s Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, expressed that visa services to Canada would be resumed under the condition that Bharat diplomats in Canada could operate in a safe and secure environment. Bharat had previously requested to recall 41 diplomats in Bharat to Canada, which had been a result of deteriorating diplomatic relations. Subsequently, these diplomats returned to Canada.
