Manila: A tragic explosion took place during a morning Catholic mass at the University of the Philippines. Three people were killed and nine were injured in the blast. The police officials suspect the explosion to be a terrorist attack organized by the Islamic State (IS).
An immediate investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances and motives behind the incident. Del Sur Governor Datu Mamintal “Bombit” Alonto Adiong expressed grave concern over the heinous nature of terrorist attacks targeting educational institutions.
In light of the attack, the University of the Philippines announced the suspension of classes until further notice. The incident follows a military operation in Del Sur province where soldiers killed 11 individuals, including members affiliated with Dawlah Islamiyah-Philippines, a pro-IS group.
