COP28: Bharath ranked 7th in Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI)

NEW DELHI: Bharath has improved its standing in the global Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), securing the 7th position in this year’s rankings. This marks a climb of one spot from its previous rank among the highest performers, as per the report released in Dubai during the global climate talks at Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP28).

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the COP28 World Climate Action Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday proposed to host the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP33) Summit in India in 2028 and pledged to reduce emissions intensity by 45 per cent till 2030.

The assessment, which monitors Climate Mitigation Efforts of 63 Countries plus the European Union – covering over 90 percent of Global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions – highlights Bharath’s high ranking in the greenhouse gas emissions mitigation and energy use categories.

Several environmentalists praised Bharath for implementing several climate change mitigation policies. They also referred the country as the world’s third largest producer of renewable energy, with 40% of its installed electricity capacity coming from non-fossil fuel sources.

Bharath, which held the 31st position in 2014, has remarkably ascend to the 7th rank in just nine years, marking a significant achievement through dedicated government efforts and the implementation of several projects. Notably, earlier PM Modi’s pledge at COP26 that Bharath will achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 underlined the political commitment. Several environmental experts believe this trackline could support achieving this ambitious goal before 2050.

Despite being the world’s most populous country, Bharath maintains a relatively low per capita carbon emission, as noted in the report. The country has gradually improved its performance to secure a better ranking.

Technically, only three countries – Denmark, Estonia, and the Philippines – rank higher than India, as no country performs well enough in all four assessed categories to achieve a perfect CCPI score. Bharath’s rank stands out as the best among the G20 countries.

CCPI 2024

The largest current polluter, China, holds the 51st position this year, while the second-largest emitter, the US, secures the 57th position. Among the host countries, the UAE secured the 65th position, while Saudi Arabia, another major oil-producing nation, occupies the last rank on the CCPI list. Among other high emitters, Germany is placed at 14th position, the UK at 20th, France at 37th, Japan at 58th, Canada at 62nd, and Russia at 63rd.

CCPI experts noted that India is trying to meet its National Determined Contribution (NDC), with clear long-term policies in place that focus on promoting renewable energy and providing financial support for domestic manufacturing of renewable energy components.
