Tokyo: The death toll from the earthquake that struck Japan on Monday has reached 15, as reported by NHK World. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has reported approximately 155 earthquakes across the country. Notably, six strong earthquakes were reported this morning. The magnitude-7.5 earthquake, which struck central Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture on New Year’s Day evening, affected many people.
The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake originated on the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa prefecture at approximately 4:10 pm local time, reaching a depth of 10 kilometers. Officials caution that strong aftershocks may occur in the coming week, especially over the next two to three days. The quake also triggered a tsunami warning in the Ishikawa region.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency has recently lifted all tsunami advisories along the Sea of Japan. Several cities in Ishikawa experienced tsunamis, with Wajima reporting waves over 120 centimetres high and Kanazawa recording waves at 90 centimeters. Similar incidents were reported in other areas as well.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, a fire broke out in Wajima City, resulting in the destruction of over 100 stores and houses, according to NHK World. Additionally, a seven-story building in the same city was reported to have collapsed. More than 44,000 households in the area are without power, officials stated.
