Washington: In response to repeated drone and missile attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi group on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, the US and UK military forces jointly carried out strikes on multiple Houthi-controlled locations in Yemen. The move came after warnings from the Biden administration and its allies that the Houthi group would face consequences for their actions.
President Joe Biden stated that he ordered the strikes “in direct response to unprecedented Houthi attacks against international maritime vessels in the Red Sea.” The US, supported by the UK, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands, conducted the strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.
In a statement on Thursday, President Biden affirmed, “Today at my direction, US military forces, together with the United Kingdom and with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands, successfully conducted strikes against a number of targets in Yemen used by Houthi rebels to endanger freedom of navigation in one of the world’s most vital waterways.” He emphasized his willingness to take further measures to safeguard people and international commerce.
The strikes, carried out using fighter jets and Tomahawk missiles, targeted over a dozen Houthi sites. The selected targets were chosen for their capability to diminish the Houthi’s persistent attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, utilizing missiles from air, surface, and sub platforms, According to US official’s reports.
The Houthi rebels, who are an Iran-aligned group, started the strike in retaliation for Israel’s Gaza conflict. The Houthis have said that they will not stop attacking until Israel ends the hostilities in Gaza.
