London: The controversial conservative leader, Boris Johnson, has won the race to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, succeeding Theresa May, who resigned after her failure to bring out a deal for Brexit.
Johnson received 92,153 votes while his main competitor Jeremy Hunt got 46, 656 votes at the Conservative leadership contest, to select the successor for the post laid vacant after Theresa May’s exit.
The former Mayor of London was the clear favourite among the conservatives. However, he has some strong opposition in his camp too. His appointment to the top post comes at a crucial juncture for the Conservative party. Their majority in Parliament is small and the country is facing a crisis on the issue of Brexit.
Johnson plans to leave the European Union without an exit plan which the opposition says will lead to job cuts, higher prices, etc. Theresa May had failed to get a plan get passed in Parliament. Her failure led to her exit and paved way for Boris ascension.
Labour Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn said that Boris Johnson had won the Conservative Party support but not the support of our country. He also added that the people of UK should decide who becomes the Prime Minister.
With his disheveled hair style and boisterous manners and demeanor Boris Johnson is a controversial figure in British politics. He is known to have extreme economic liberal policies and has been caught uttering racist and homophobic statements. However, Boris was the clear choice and the most heard name to win when Theresa May stepped down.
