New Delhi: India’s opening batsman Rohit Sharma has been recommended for this year’s Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.
Along with him three others including decorated woman wrestler Vinesh Phogat, table tennis player Manika Batra and 2016 Paralympic gold medallist in high jump Mariyappan Thangavele have also been recommended for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award on Tuesday.
The recommendations for the prestigious award were given by a 12-member selection committee of the Sports Ministry.
The 33-year-old Rohit will only be the fourth cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar, just-retired Mahendra Singh Dhoni and current skipper Virat Kohli to be conferred with the Khel Ratna.
The National Sports Awards ceremony will take place virtually on August 29 which includes Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the Arjuna award, the Dronacharya award and the Dhyan Chand award. These awards are conferred every year by the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 29, the National Sports Day.
