Hangzhou: The Indian women’s cricket team has scripted a glorious chapter in the annals of sports history, clinching India’s first-ever gold medal in cricket at the Asian Games. Led by the dynamic Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian women outshone Sri Lanka in a thrilling final, triumphing by a margin of 19 runs and etching their names in the record books.
This remarkable victory adds to India’s impressive medal tally at the Asian Games 2023. India has clinched a total of 11 medals thus far, and this gold medal is a testament to the prowess and determination of the Indian women’s cricket team.
The women’s cricket final witnessed a brilliant display of skill and determination. For India, Smriti Mandhana and Rodrigues played crucial roles by amassing nearly 50 runs, setting a total of 116 runs with seven wickets lost to Sri Lanka.
Titas Sadhu emerged as a key figure in defending India’s total by taking three crucial wickets. Deepti Sharma, Pooja Vastrakar, and Devika Vaidya also made significant contributions, each claiming a wicket to maintain the balance of the game. Rajeshwari Gayakwad showcased her prowess by securing two wickets, further bolstering India’s strong defence.
Earlier in the tournament, India’s 10m men’s air rifle team secured the nation’s first gold medal, setting the tone for India’s exceptional performance at the Asian Games. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar also displayed his mettle, earning a bronze medal in the individual event for the 10 metre men’s rifle. The Indian contingent further shone by clinching the bronze in the 25-metre men’s rapid-fire pistol team event.
In the realm of rowing, India’s prowess continued to shine. The Indian team secured two bronze medals in rowing events, with commendable performances in the men’s four and men’s quadruple sculls categories.
