Johannesburg: Opting to bat first after winning the toss proved to be a significant setback for the Proteas’, as they could only manage to score 58 runs with the loss of seven wickets in just 13 overs in the first ODI against Bharat.
Tony de Zori emerged as the top scorer for South Africa, contributing 28 runs before being dismissed by Arshdeep Singh. On the Indian side, Avesh Khan and Arshdeep delivered outstanding performances, each claiming four wickets, compelling the Proteas’ players to make their way back to the dressing room.
The Proteas’ woes began early, as Reesa Hendricks (0) and the ‘man- in-form’ Rassie van der Dussen were quickly dismissed without scoring. Aiden Markram (12), Heinrich Klaasen(6), Wiaan Mulder (0), and David Miller (2) followed suit, leaving Andile Phehlukwayo and Nandre Burger at the crease.
