Islamabad: The Indian tennis team confirmed its entry into the Davis Cup 2024 World Group I after a convincing victory over Pakistan in Islamabad after six decades. Carrying a 2-0 lead into Day 2, Bharat’s Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni emerged victorious in the doubles match against Pakistani players Aqeel Khan and Muzammil Murtaza, sealing the tie at the Pakistan Sports Complex.
The duo Bhambri and Myneni demonstrated dominance in a two-hour match, securing a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory and marking Bharat’s eighth consecutive win against Pakistan in Davis Cup tennis. Despite Pakistan’s strategic move of replacing Barkatullah with Aqeel Khan for the crucial doubles match; it had little impact on the resilient Indian pair.
The intent of the Indian team was evident from the first game of the match, breaking the Pakistani serve to claim a 1-0 lead. Bhambri and Myneni continued their momentum, reaching a 4-1 lead after breaking their opponents in the fifth game. Despite a resistance effort from the Pakistani duo, the Indian tennis players secured the first set in 26 minutes.
In the second set, the Pakistani team fought back fiercely, displaying improved coordination to hold their serves. The closely contested match eventually entered a tiebreaker, where the Pakistani team initially gained a 2-0 lead. However, the Indian pair swiftly regained control, securing five consecutive points to clinch victory and secure a spot in the Davis Cup World Group I, scheduled for September.
