Itanagar: Kerala kicked off their campaign in the Santosh Trophy National Football Championship final round with a 3-1 win over Assam on Wednesday in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.
According to a report, midfielder Abdu Raheem put Kerala in the lead in the 19th minute. The seven-time champions extended their lead in the second half, with Sajeesh E finding the back of the net in the 67th minute. Assam managed to pull one goal back through Dipu Mirdha, but Kerala secured the victory as captain Nijo Gilbert scored in the fifth minute of added time.
Teams in Group A, alongside Kerala, also include Assam, Services, and Meghalaya, as well as Arunachal Pradesh and Goa. Group B comprises defending champions Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi, Mizoram, Manipur, and Railways. The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. Kerala’s next match is against Goa on Friday at 7 p.m..
