This year’s National Navy Day celebrations will be held at the Sindhudurg Fort built by Chhatrapati Shivaji. India celebrates Navy Day on 4th December. It commemorates the 1971 attack by the Indian Navy on Karachi harbor against Pakistan. Sindhudurg Fort was built in 1660.
Last year Navy Day was celebrated on the east coast of India but this year the celebrations are being organized on the west coast. The location was carefully chosen and the history of Sindhudurg Fort is closely related to the Indian Navy. The Indian Army and Indian Air Force organized parades in Bengaluru and Chandigarh last year. This year’s Air Force Day Parade is scheduled for October 8 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
Last year, the Navy had replaced the St George’s Cross emblem on the flag with the Chhatrapati Shivaji emblem. It was changed during the INS Vikrant Commission ceremony. The Prime Minister commented on this change that the burden of colonial culture has been lifted. The Ministry of Defense has also started a drive to rename British-era cantonments as military stations. Discussions were held with the state governments to divide the areas in the 58 cantonments.
