New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, has granted approval for the ambitious Rs 75,021 crore PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana project, aimed at fostering solar power generation on rooftops. Under this initiative, approximately one crore households will receive up to 300 units of free electricity per month.
Explaining the Cabinet’s decisions, Union Minister Anurag Thakur highlighted that the scheme will offer subsidies ranging from Rs 30,000 for one megawatt (MW), Rs 60,000 for 2 MW, to Rs 78,000 for 3 MW. A Model Solar Village will be developed in each district of the country to act as a role model for the adoption of rooftop solar in rural areas.
The PM Suryaghar portal will streamline the application process, providing households with essential information, including details on solar panel installation agencies. Through the Portal, households can apply for subsidies and select suitable vendors for rooftop solar installation. The portal will further aid decision-making by offering insights such as system sizes, benefits calculators, and vendor ratings.
Additionally, households can access collateral-free, low-interest loans at around 7% interest rates for installing residential rooftop solar systems up to 3 kW. Existing electricity consumers can also apply via the official website pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Initially, customers will bear the entire cost of rooftop solar system installation, with subsidies credited directly to their accounts upon submission of completion documents.
