THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fr. Eugene Pereira, Vicar General of the Latin Archdiocese, welcomed the central government’s involvement in addressing the recurring accidents in Muthalappozhi. Fr. Eugene Pereira criticized the Kerala state government, noting that despite their claims of supporting the fishermen, numerous lives continue to be lost every year. According to him, the state government has not taken adequate measures for the welfare of the local community.
Fr. Eugene Pereira further accused the Pinarayi government of neglecting the needs of the fishermen in the area. He claimed that instead of providing assistance during accidents, the ministers who arrived at the scene mistreated women and children. Specifically, Minister V. Sivankutty’s comment of “do not make a show off” towards those in distress was deemed inappropriate.
In contrast, Union Minister V. Muraleedharan sought the assistance of the Central Fisheries Department and engaged in discussions with Union Fisheries Minister Shri Parshottam Rupala. Together, they explored potential solutions to address the challenges faced by fishermen in the region. The central government has decided to implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future and plans to dispatch the Central Fisheries Department to the area.
Minister Muraleedharan assured that the central government’s plans will be implemented with careful consideration of the interests of the local fishermen.
