Kochi: A report said that the High Court of Kerala sentenced ‘V4 Kochi’ President, Nipun Cherian, to four months in prison and fine of Rs.2000. He was sentenced in a contempt case for his statements against a sitting judge of the High Court. The HC had taken suo motu case against the V4 Kochi President.

According to the report, Nipun Cherian had raised allegations of corruption against a sitting judge of High Court. He was speaking to a group of farmers, fishermen and representatives of the local people in Chellanam, when he made these statements against the sitting judge. The speech was live streamed and then uploaded on the social media page of V4 Kochi on October 5, 2022.

The Division Bench of the High Court also refused Nipun Cherian’s plea to stay the sentence so as to approach the Supreme Court for appeal. The HC maintained that the appeal could be filed while serving the sentence.

The report said that the HC took suo motu contempt proceedings against Nipun Cherian in November 2022, saying that the speech made by him tarnished the integrity of the honorable Judge.
