Elephant lovers’ group raises suspicion behind the loss of eyesight of elephant PT 7

Palakkad: An elephant lovers’ group has raised suspicion on the loss of eyesight of the rogue elephant PT 7, which was captured and put in cage by the Forest Department from Dhoni in Palakkad. The elephant lovers’ group alleges that the elephant might have lost its eyesight when the animal got tortured during training.

The group adds that they had earlier received a report from the Forest Department through RTI informing that PT 7 was completely healthy and that the animal did not sustain any pellet injuries.

However, the other day the Forest Department officials informed that PT 7 lost the vision of the right eye. The Department also said that the animal’s vision might have been lost due to pellet shots from air gun. Even when the expert committee of the High Court examined, the Forest Department repeated that the eyesight might have been lost due to pellet shots.

The elephant lovers’ group refutes this claim and say that there is suspicion in how the PT 7 lost its eyesight. On April 26 the Forest Department, in its reply to the group’s RTI question, had said that PT 7 did not sustain any pellet injury and that many expert doctors had examined the elephant. But now the Forest Department is saying that the animal lost its eyesight due to pellet shots. The group is asking if this claim is made to hide something else.

Meanwhile, the Forest Department said that they will register a complaint with Chief Wildlife Warden concerning the issue.
