Palakkad: The Kerala Police’s utter disregard for common citizens has come to the fore again with the plight of an 80-year-old woman. She was arrested by the police in Palakkad in a case of mistaken identity and had to fight the court case for four years.
The police action can be considered an offence against human rights of the senior citizen. The police had arrested her on the charge of trespassing into a house even though she denied it several times.
The old lady told the media that she has no idea of the case and has no clue why the police registered such a case against her. The Palakkad police also did not take necessary action on the Court’s order to approach the complainant and to verify the identity of the accused.
The real reason for this mistaken identity was that the real accused person had given a false address to the police and had absconded. The police failed miserably in even checking if the address, given by an accused, is correct or not.
The police neither collected the evidences correctly nor did they conduct the investigation properly.
The incident related to the case happened in 1998. A case was lodged against a lady named Bharati, who was working at the house of Kallikad native, Rajagopal.
Following a quarrel with the members of the house, Bharati, went to Rajagopal’s house and destroyed some flower pots and other things. Bharati was arrested by the police following the incident. However, Bharati got out on bail and went into hiding.
In 2019, the police arrested another Bharati in this case. With this arrest, the innocent 80-year-old lady had to go to court for the past four years to prove her innocence.
