Ernakulam: The killing of a one-and-half month old infant at a lodge room in Kochi had shocked the state. The police are now saying that the accused, Shanif, had also tried to convert the baby’s mother, Aswathy. The baby was born out of Aswathy’s first marriage.
Shanif told the police officers that he had decided to kill the baby at its birth itself and was waiting for an opportunity for one month. He said that he killed the baby once he, Aswathy and the baby entered the lodge room.
It is reported that Shanif had been continuously torturing the one-and-a-half month baby. He believed that inflicting small wounds on the baby’s body would lead to catching pneumonia and if the baby dies in the hospital, then no one would suspect foul play.
With this intention, Shanif used to harm the baby since the day it was born. Earlier also the baby was brought to the hospital with injuries. The postmortem report states that the baby’s backbone was broken.
Shanif killed the baby by smashing his knee into the baby’s head. The accused also bit the infant to confirm if the baby had died. The police are now gathering more scientific evidences in the case. As part of this, the police will conduct a saliva test on Shanif.
The baby was killed by Shanif and Aswathy on 1st December at a lodge room in Kochi.
