Chennai: The state government of Tamil Nadu has declared a four-day holiday for schools, colleges, and various institutions in response to persistent heavy rainfall, particularly impacting Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi districts. The incessant downpour has resulted in widespread disruptions, causing severe waterlogging in Thoothukudi and raising alarms about potential flooding in various areas due to overflowing lakes and rivers.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued predictions indicating heavy rain in specific areas of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, and Thanjavur districts of Tamil Nadu. The forecast also includes the likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, adding further complexity to the challenges faced by the affected regions.
In Thoothukudi’s Kovilpatti area, the ongoing rainfall has caused 40 lakes to reach their maximum capacity, resulting in water overflow. Authorities are actively engaged in managing the situation, deploying sandbags and JCB machines in critical areas such as Koosalipatti and Inam Maniyachi, where rivers are at risk of overflowing.
Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi districts are grappling with substantial disruptions to normal life due to continuous rainfall. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings about potential cyclonic winds affecting the eastern coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and the Gulf of Mannar, heightening concerns about the evolving weather situation.
