Kochi: Mariyakutty, who gained public attention through her protest against the government for a pending welfare pension, has once again approached the High Court, citing a prolonged delay in the disbursal of her welfare pensions. In a petition submitted to the court, Mariyakutty highlighted the suspension of her pensions for the past five months. The state government had previously said that the delay was due to a shortfall in funds from the central government. However, the government alleges that Mariyakutty’s petition is politically motivated.
The High Court, expressing deep displeasure with the government’s position, has brought attention to Mariyakutty’s circumstances. Living without any alternative means, the 78-year-old woman finds herself in a vulnerable position, having to beg in front of the government for her pension of Rs 1600 to sustain her basic needs like medicine and food. During court proceedings, the judiciary questioned the government’s priorities, asking whether any planned celebrations were being canceled due to a lack of funds.
