Palakkad: The distribution of ‘Bharat Rice’ faced opposition from Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) workers in Palakkad. Despite the objections raised by CITU activists, distributors continued to supply ‘Bharat Rice’ in the Elapulli area of Palakkad.
The incident unfolded at Elapulli Para Junction, where CITU workers intercepted the distribution process, insisting on receiving ‘nokku kooli’ (gawking wages) before allowing the distribution to proceed. ‘Nokku kooli’ is a practice in Kerala where headloaders demand payment for merely observing cargo loading or unloading activities.
‘Bharat Rice’ enjoys popularity among the people in Kerala. Despite attempts by opposing parties to impede its distribution, ‘Bharat Rice’ continues to sell well in Kerala. Recently, in Alappuzha, a large number of people queued up to purchase ‘Bharat Rice’. To manage the crowd, rice was eventually distributed to a thousand individuals on a token basis.
