Ernakulam: Crucial documents submitted by the police in the murder of SFI leader M. Abhimanyu were found missing. The documents, including the charge sheet, which were submitted to the Ernakulam Sessions Court by the Ernakulam Central Police, were lost just as the trial was about to commence. The Sessions Judge has informed the High Court about the loss of these documents.
Abhimanyu died on July 2, 2018, following a clash between SFI and Campus Front, activists over graffiti at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam. Campus Front is the student wing of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) According to the charge sheet, which was filed on September 26, 2018, alleged members of the PFI from outside the campus arrived with weapons and fatally stabbed Abhimanyu. Reports indicate that Sahal Hamza, a native of Nettoor, Mekkad, was the one who stabbed Abhimanyu. The central government, in a notification banning the Popular Front, included the Abhimanyu murder case among the crimes leading to the ban. There are a total of 26 accused and 125 witnesses in the case.
