World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, serves as a global platform dedicated to advancing mental well-being worldwide. The theme for World Mental Health Day 2023 is ‘Mental health is a universal human right.’ This theme underscores the importance of enhancing awareness, knowledge, and action to safeguard and promote the mental health of all individuals as an inherent human right.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “The overall objective of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.
The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.”
WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, Poonam Khetrapal said on Tuesday, that “the focus of human rights has historically been on needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare. However, mental health stands as a critical pillar for human well-being. Recognizing that mental health is a universal human right is acknowledging the relationship between mental health and the overall quality of life.”
