Tokyo: The aftermath of the series of earthquakes that rocked Japan on New Year’s Day continues to escalate, with the death toll rising to 48 and numerous injuries reported across multiple prefectures, according to NHK World. The affected regions include Ishikawa, Niigata, Fukui, Toyama, and Gifu.
Fire department officials said that 25 buildings, including houses, have collapsed in Wajima City. The impact of the quake extends to various prefectures, with many people reported injured in four areas, including Niigata and Toyoma.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has recorded over 100 aftershocks in the region since the initial quake. The Hokuriku Electric Power Company reported the shutdown of two generators at its Nanao Ota thermal power plant in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Power outages have affected over 44,000 houses in the prefecture, while key highways remain impassable. The soldiers leading the rescue operations face significant struggles in the wake of widespread damage. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced that the earthquake had an extensive impact on the country. 900 emergency calls have been received for emergency help since the disaster unfolded.
