Mumbai: Another crack emerges in the facade of opposition unity as a significant development unfolds. The conspicuous absence of Arvind Kejriwal’s image from a promotional poster for the forthcoming meeting in Mumbai on August 31 and September 1 has raised eyebrows. This omission is particularly noteworthy considering that Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi’s Chief Minister, has been excluded from the poster, which prominently features images of other party leaders. Speculation abounds that the recent announcement of opposition’s convener post has likely triggered internal divisions, leading to this situation.
Prominently displayed on campaign boards is the visage of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, symbolising his apparent leadership of the opposition. However, it’s important to note that the Aam Aadmi Party has not endorsed Rahul Gandhi’s leadership role. The party has expressed its preference for Nitish Kumar to assume the convener’s position in lieu of Rahul. This stance has been reiterated by the Aam Aadmi Party on multiple occasions, with the assertion that they might reconsider their alignment with the opposition if this condition is not met. Other parties, including Trinamool, have aligned themselves with this perspective as well.
While the Aam Aadmi Party and others advocate for Nitish Kumar’s leadership, the Congress party appears apprehensive about relinquishing its own significance within the opposition. This situation poses a challenge for Rahul Gandhi, in contrast to past elections where he assumed leadership positions. Furthermore, the Trinamool Congress has already signalled its intentions by putting forward Mamata Banerjee as its prime ministerial candidate.
